Traditionally, the role of the secret identity in the super-hero trope is anonymity for the protection of loved ones. But when that hero, like Clark Kent, is also a writer, it has added significance in terms of personal fulfillment and professional ethics: the secret identity is what lets him be published on the merits of his work and not his social influence.
